Side-Pump Combiners Enhance Space Laser Communication Performance

We are excited to be presenting PCT’s latest paper on space communication at OPIC’25 (Optics & Photonics International Congress 2025), in Japan: Comparison among Side-Pump Combiners, End-Pump Combiners and WDM utilized in Erbium Ytterbium Doped Fiber Amplifier under Vacuum Conditions.

The study explores the performance of Side-Pump Combiners (SPCs), End-Pump Combiners (EPCs), and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) in Erbium Ytterbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EYDFAs) under vacuum conditions. Our findings show that SPCs, tested under thermal vacuum, outperform conventional methods with significantly lower noise figures, high pump efficiencies (97%-99%), and minimal insertion loss (≤0.1 dB). While SPCs enhance EYDFAs for space communication, their power handling in vacuum conditions is limited due to heat dissipation constraints.
